Why oversized is usually the right call
The single most common mistake in a Pasadena garden is a pot two sizes too small. Against a two-story facade or a wide motor court, anything under three feet disappears. Go bigger than feels comfortable in the yard, it will look correct at home.
At this scale, weight and drainage matter as much as looks. A four-foot jar filled with wet soil is a permanent installation, so place it before you plant it, and set it on pot feet or a pad so water can leave.

- Fill the base with lightweight material, you rarely need four feet of soil depth.
- Getting it home
- Bring a truck and a second person, or arrange delivery. These do not fit in a sedan.
- Drainage
- Confirm the piece is drilled. Decorative jars often aren't, and standing water cracks clay in a cold snap.
- Pairs
- Flanking a driveway or steps? Ask about matched pairs, stock singles are common, pairs need checking.
